Laguna del Rincon,
Santa Bárbara
In partnership with the Honduran Ministry of Education's Educatodos
Program, 2 solar electric systems were installed in this community.
The first powers a large television and VCR used for a Telebasica
distance-learning program aimed at 7th and 8th grade students. The
second powers lights and audio equipment used for the Ministry of
Education's Educatodos program, which provides primary and secondary
education to youth and adults.
Enersol provided technical assistance and training to the Ministry
of Education, Honduran PV (solar energy) vendors, and ADESOL, who
assumed responsibility for community selection, organization, and
coordination of future installations in Honduras (in conjunction
with the Ministry of Education).
The potential market for PV-powered Telebasica and Educatodos systems
is substantial, since over half of Honduras' schools lack electricity.
USAID's main education coordinator, who has played a significant
role in developing the Educatodos methodology, showed support for
Enersol's efforts by attending the formal introduction of both education
programs in Laguna del Rincon. USAID and Enersol will continue working
together to improve educational opportunities for Honduran students,
while increasing the use of PV systems.
El Ocotillo, Santa
Bárbara
El Ocotillo is a community of 70 families nestled high in the mountains
of Santa Bárbara along the border with Guatemala. The project
began in August 2004 with community organizing activities and the
PV equipment was installed in September as a continued training
module for the NGO following the EduSol workshop. The IT hardware
and software were installed in October, allowing a group of seven
teachers, students, an adult community member and CCFH’s rural
promoter in the area, to begin an on site computer training course.
Witnessing the fruits of their work and the benefits of PV, this
highly motivated community organized their own electrification project
for the community’s church by collecting donations from the
congregation and soliciting the installation from the same PV company
that installed the system on the school.
Los Amates, Francisco
Morazán
Los Amates is an extremely small community of 15 families located
in the mountains of the department of Francisco Morazan. The PV
system was installed in late September. The computers were not expected
to arrive until January 2005. The project began in October.
San Marcos, Atlántida
Bayan assisted the community
to elect a committee, develop the project by-laws and establish
the monthly user fees to be paid by parents of school children,
along with a system for collecting and reporting. The PV system
was installed in the three room school in September as part of the
EduSol training workshop for Honduran NGOs. The IT hardware and
software were installed in October and training for teachers and
select community members began in November.
