Dulcis (May 2002)
Through a partnership with the Peace Corps, a local Catholic school, and support from the Weyerhaeuser family's CHERBEC Fund, Enersol provided a portable solar energy kit to run notebooks computers in this remote Haitian village. Enough power is generated to run the computers for 2 hours each day. The user population numbers approximately 20 high school students.
To make this project successful, a multi-tiered training program was conducted:
- Enersol staff trained a Peace Corps volunteer in the essentials of photovoltaics for school applications;
- The Peace Corps... and students in the use of solar-powered computers;
- 8-week class given by Peace Corps Volunteer (Shiloh Walen), to develop simple lesson plans that can be used by teachers locally. The class included 21 students, 14-17 years old;
- A 3-day seminar was given to 4 adults (3 professionals, 1 school director), to prepare them to conduct an 8-week introduction to computers course for students; and
- 4 educational CD-ROMS were purchased, for teaching French and math, and for use as resources and teacher aids.
